Emoji domains, explained
- What is an emoji domain?
- An emoji domain is a web address whose name is a single Unicode emoji rather than letters β for example π¦.to. It is a normal domain name registered in the ordinary way; the emoji is stored in the domain system in an encoded ASCII form called punycode, and browsers convert between the two automatically.
- Do emoji domains work in web browsers?
- Yes. Typing the emoji into a browser's address bar resolves to the site, because the browser converts the emoji to its punycode form before looking the domain up. Both spellings of the address are the same domain, so links can be published in either form.
- What is punycode, and why does every listing show one?
- Punycode (also called the ACE form) is the ASCII encoding of a non-ASCII domain name β π¦.to is stored and transmitted as xn--st9h.to. Every listing shows both because the emoji form is what a visitor types and the punycode form is what registrars, DNS records, and email systems use.
